A Study on Growth Potential and Development Prospects of the Coastal Cruise Industry

Concept of coastal cruise


- Under the domestic law, it does not yet have a specific definition.

- The term, coastal cruise, is defined as a ship that is operated on the coastal area with the functions of a cruise ship.


Analysis on the actual conditions of the coastal cruise industry


- On the demand side, the current status of marine tourism and marine transportation, demands for the marine tourism and the transport demands for passenger ship and cruises ship are analyzed.

- On the supply side, the trend of the cruise ship industry in Korea is analyzed and presented.

- Coastal cruise-related laws and regulations, infrastructure and facilities (berth facilities and terminals) are analyzed.


Analysis on necessity of the coastal cruise industry


- The necessity of promoting the coastal cruise industry is suggested from the aspects of users, operators and policy.

- On the user aspect, fulfilling the needs of the marine tourism are suggested, on the business aspect, business opportunities in the marine tourism industry and opportunities to create new added values at port and the policy aspect, diversification and growth encouragement of the marine tourism market.


Analysis on the River Cruise case in Europe


- According to a survey on the economic effects of the European River Cruise industry, more than 1.1 billion euro was invested in construction of river cruise ships from 2013 to 2014 (for 2 years). In 2012, the passengers of the European River Cruise spent (ticket and consumption on board included) around 1.3 billion euro and 500 million euro at the port of call.

- It demonstrates that high economic effects are expected from the growth and facilitation of the coastal (river) cruise industry.


Analysis on the Changjiang Cruise case in China


- Changjiang Cruise has already a half century history since its launch in 1960. In particular, the Chongqing City Government, located at the center of Changjiang, has a goal of becoming the “global tourist destination through the China Three Gorges Corporation.

- Thanks to China’s economic development, the standards of people’s life have increased in Changjiang. Changjiang tourism products are classified into high, medium and low levels according to customer’s demands.

- According to the 2012 National Tourism Conference of the China Tourism Bureau, China showed its determination to implement the cruise industry promotion policy in many different regions in the country including Chongqing, Shanghai, Shandong, Tianjin, Hainan, Canton and Fujian.


Evaluation result of the industry’s growth potential


- Port facilities, tourism resources, cruise ship on depot, national income, cruise ship companies are considered important factors in promoting the coastal cruise industry.

- Port facilities, tourism resources, cruise ship on depot, cruise ship companies are not in good conditions and have a low growth potential. The improvement plans for the factors are imperative to develop the coastal cruise industry in the future.

- Policy developments for tourism products, the number of employees in the tourism industry, tourism activities and historical and cultural aspects are important for the development of the industry.


Development forecast for the coastal cruise market


- In Korea, the number of coastal cruise passengers is expected to increase from 204,000 in 2010 to 306,000 by 2020 while maintaining the 2.2 % range growth rate.
