A Study on Socioeconomic Impact of Marine Leisure Industry and Development of Indicators

Summary


○ With increasing demand of marine leisure tourism activities, the need for measures to assess its socioeconomic impact is also rising. However, Korea’s marine leisure tourism sector has not compiled basic statistical data.

– The behavioral analysis on marine leisure tourism is used to estimate the size and spending structure of marine tourists. With this information, it is necessary to analyze the economic impact of marine leisure tourism.
– Indicators should be developed to assess the outcome of marine leisure tourism policies

○ The result of the behavioral survey on marine leisure tourism is as follows

– Korean people visit the ocean approximately 157,550,000 times a year.
– Korean people spend about KRW 23trillion and 3.4 billion a year on marine leisure tourism.
– Korean consumer spending on marine leisure industry generates KRW 42.2 trillion of annual production inducement effect. It also produces added values amounting to KRW 16.6 trillion a year.

○ It is necessary to collect statistical data on marine leisure tourism by type, and build a system for analysis and process.

○ The behavioral survey on marine leisure tourism should be conducted on a regular basis and build a database.

– The survey design and system reflecting the characteristics of marine tourism should be established and the survey and analysis should be conducted regularly. It can be utilized to establish activation plans for marine tourism in mid-to-long term and discover tourism resources.

○ It is important to review the direction of marine leisure tourism promotion policy. Also, various indicators should be developed to analyze the achievement and impact of related projects.

○ In the perspective of laws and regulations, laws related to marine leisure tourism should be restructured to systematically support and implement policies

– It is necessary to restructure related laws to secure the connectivity with upper plans and effectively implement policies.
– A mid-to-long term plan should be established in accordance with related laws. Also it is required to secure statistical data on marine leisure tourism and carry out behavioral survey.
