그린란드 서부의 근해그린란드 할리벗(halibut)어업이 넙치류를 대상으로 최초의 MSC인증을 받았다고 합니다.
인증을 위한 평가는 2016년 3월에 시작되었으며, 인증에 약 14개월 정도가 소요되었다고 합니다.
이 지역에서의 할리벗(halibut)어업은 TAC제도에 의해 관리되고 있으며, 그린란드 배핀만 (Baffin Bay)와 웨스트그린랜드 (West Greenland)의 데이비스해협에서 1960년대 중반부터 운영되고 있습니다.
어업의 관리는 로그북, 옵저버제도와 트롤망의 망목제한제도가 동시에 운영되고 있는데, 중국과 일본에 필렛, 초밥 및 생선회용으로 주로 수출된다고 합니다.
MSC인증은 수산물의 품질을 관리하는 제도로 흔히들 알고 있지만, 원래 자원관리의 범위를 생산자에서 소비자까지 확대한 개념입니다. FAO에서도 MSC표준이 지속가능한 어업을 위한 행동강령(Code of Conduct forsustainable fisheries)을 준수하는 생산･유통방식임을 공식적으로 인정하고 있다고 합니다.
P.S. 개인적으로 우리나라도 빨리 이와 같은 제도가 도입되었으면 하는 바람입니다. 연근해어업 생산이 다들 아시다시피 너무 부진한 가운데 드는 느낌이었습니다.
