오일·가스 메이저 제조업체인 영국·네덜란드 합작계열 회사인 Royal Dutch Shell이 LNG 벙커링 사업에서 공세를 확대하고 있습니다. 북미에서 크루즈 선박을 대상으로 LNG 연료를 공급하는 계획이 수립되었으며, LNG 연료유 공급선박을 유럽 지역에 추가 투입하는 계획도 발표되었습니다.
Shell은 11월 8일 크루즈 분야 세계 최대 기업인 미국 카니발 코퍼레이션에 LNG 벙커링을 공급하는 계약을 체결하였습니다. Shell사는 2020년부터 미국 동안 항만에서 카니발 산하 크루즈 운영사들이 운항하는 크루즈를 대상으로 연료 공급을 개시합니다.
금번 카니발과 LNG 연료 공급 계약을 맺은 Shell사는 올해 들어 미국 내 자회사를 통해 LNG 벙커링 바지 신조 선박에 대해 장기용선계약을 맺은바 있습니다. 동 바지 선박의 선주는 미국 선사인 걸프 인터내셔널 마린입니다.
걸프 인터내셔널 마린은 미국 조선소인 VT 하루타 마린 조선소에 LNG 탱크 용량 4,000㎥ 선형의 LNG 벙커 바지선을 발주했으며, 동 선박에 탑재되는 주요 선박용 기기는 선박용 기기 전문 제조업체인 미국 발치라가 공급합니다.
한편 네덜란드 선주인 앤서니 베이더사는 11월 8일 현재 Shell에 정기 대선하고 있는 7,500㎥ 선형 다목적 가스 운반선인 "코랄 메탄"을 LNG 연료 공급선으로 개조하는 계획을 발표했습니다. 2018년 초 개조 공사를 착수하고 개조공사 종료 후에는 Shell은 동 선박을 북해와 지중해 등 유럽 지역에 배선할 예정입니다. 이처럼 Shell은 북미와 유럽 지역 전역에 걸쳐 LNG 선박연료유 공급 인프라를 지속적으로 확대시킨다는 계획입니다.
Shell는 이미 올해 여름부터 네덜란드 로테르담항을 기점으로 LNG 연료 공급선인 "Cardissa(6,500㎥)"의 운용을 개시한바 있습니다. Shell사는 향후에도 LNG 연료 공급선을 유럽/북미를 중심으로 추가 배치하고 선박용 LNG 연료 수요의 고조에 대응한다는 방침입니다.
Shell사는 글로벌 LNG 벙커링 네트워크의 구축을 전략적으로 추진하고 있으며, IMO의 중유에서 LNG로의 연료 전환 시책을 가장 적극적으로 지지하는 기업으로 평가되고 있습니다.
이미 유럽과 싱가포르 항만에서는 LNG 연료의 공급이 시작되었습니다. 향후 Shell사는 미국과 중동 내 주요 항만 등에서도 사업화를 위한 검토를 실시할 계획입니다.
