- 아이슬란드 유력 일간지 Morgunbladid가 6월 28일부터 아이슬란드 레이캬비크에서 KMI가 공동개최하는 해양법 국제학술회의에 대해, 카운터파트인 토마스 하이다 국제해양법재판소 재판관과 인터뷰한 후 전면 기사를 게재했다.

Morgunbladid와의 인터뷰에서 토마스 하이다 재판관은 금번 해양법 국제학술회의는 작년에 양해 각서 (MOU)에 서명한 아이슬란드 해양법연구소 (he Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland, LSII)와 Korea Maritime Institue(KMI)가 공동 주최한다고 밝혔다.
그는 이번 국제학술회의에서는 유엔해양법협약(UNCLOS)이 체결된 이후에 괄목할 만한 지식의 진전이 이루어져 온 주제들과 지구 온난화와 같은 상황으로 인해 변화할 수밖에 없는 이슈 등에 대해 토의할 것이라고 설명했다.
회의 패널 참가자들의 대부분은 이미 세계적으로 명성이 있는 전문가들이지만 유망한 젊은 전문가들도 있다. 예를 들어 Helga Guðmundsdóttir는 작년 하버드에서 법학석사(LLM) 학위를 마쳤으며 현재 브뤼셀의 법률 회사 Van Bael & Bellis에서 일하고 있는데, 그녀는 해저고지(seafloor highs) 문제와 아이슬란드 남서쪽의 레이캬네즈 릿지 (Reykjanes Ridge) 에 관해 석사 학위 논문을 썼고, 이번 아이슬란드 KMI 컨퍼런스에서도 같은 주제로 발표할 예정이다.
In his interview, Judge Tomas Heidar introduced the Conference and note that it is co-hosted by the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland and the Korea Maritime Institute who signed a Memorandum of Understanding last year.
He explained that the Conference will address topics where there has been a particular advancement in knowledge since UNCLOS was negotiated, as well as issues that are subject to a change in circumstances due to global warming.
He mentioned that most of the panelists of the Conference are world famous experts but that there are also some young and upcoming experts, including Helga Gupmundsdóttir.
In the interview with Helga Guðmundsdóttir, it is noted that she finished her LLM degree from Harvard last year and is now working for the law firm Van Bael & Bellis in Brussels. She wrote her master thesis on the question of seafloor highs and the Reykjanes Ridge southwest of Iceland in particular and will speak on that same topic at the Iceland KMI Conference.
