메릴랜드 대학의 데니스 브리트버그(Denise Breitburg) 교수는 1월 4일 “사이언스지(Science)”에 바닷 속 용존 산소량 감소에 대한 새로운 논문을 발표했다.
데니스 교수는 지구 온난화가 수중 용존산소량 감소를 초래했고, 그 속도가 20세기 중반 이후 더욱 가속화되고 있음을 언급하면서, 수중 용존산소량 감소가 다시 기후변화를 촉진할 수 있다고 경고했다.
지구 온난화에 따른 수온상승은 물 속에 용해된 산소의 양을 감소시킨다. 용존산소량 감소는 수중 생물의 번식을 방해하고, 수명을 단축시키는 결과를 초래한다.
또한 화석연료의 연소, 하수 오물 등에서 생성된 질소는 바다의 식물성 플랑크톤의 번식을 촉진하는데, 식물성플랑크톤이 만들어내는 유기물이 분해되는 과정에서 산소가 과소비되어 다른 생물들의 호흡을 방해한다.
데니스 교수는 산소량이 극도로 낮은 지역은 기후변화를 악화시키는 온실가스를 자체적으로 생성할 가능성이 있다고 덧붙였다.
