The objective of the study is to compare the strategies of the international logistics complexes on port and its hinterland to each other in Asian countries and to find ways to establish international logistics complexes such as free zone of those ports in Korea.
The major locational determinants are the proximity to markets and customers, clusters of related industry, global networks, infrastructure of logistics and information, labor climate, land costs, and skilled labor. The study reveals that Singapore, Hongkong, Kaohsiung are superier to Korea in terms of the above locational determinants except for geographical conditions, a few of logistics infrastructure, and logistics costs. In 1999 Free Zone Act was recently adopted in Korea, which will facilitate the process and strengthen the logistics capability as a international logistics hub in Northeast Asia. The strategies to establish and manage the free zone of ports and its hinterland are: the establishment of a longterm vision of international logistics complexes, the improvement of the proximity to markets/customers by way of linkage of global networks, the activation of the industrial complex in hinterland, the development of the skilled labor and the labor climate, the cooperation between governmental bodies and government/provincial bodies, continuous development of logistics infrastructure etc. |
